Assignments, frequent moves and long separations in training all come with their share of stress. Fortunately, the Department of Defense offers a variety of free counseling support for married service members and their families. They say asking for support is a sign of strength.

Every couple experiences and deals with stress differently. Implementation itself is stressful, but so is the time before and after. You and your partner may feel sad, irritated, angry or frustrated. You may argue, avoid difficult discussions, or withdraw altogether. These feelings are completely normal for couples throughout the deployment cycle. But that's why counseling support is invaluable - addressing issues before they escalate can help reduce stress and improve your relationship.

Regardless of why you need it, there are two types of counseling available to service members and spouses. Non-medical counseling. This type of counseling is designed to help you with everyday concerns such as improving your relationships at home and at work, managing stress and anger, adjusting to post-deployment, parenting, and grief and loss issues. Non-medical counseling is often a short-term approach to problem solving. This may include stress-related trauma therapy or addiction counseling, but no medication is prescribed.
Medical counseling is designed to address long-term problems such as drug and alcohol abuse, psychological problems, post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, child or spousal abuse, suicidal thoughts, or other psychological problems that negatively impact a marriage.
Each establishment has a family service or support center, chaplain support, child development center, or other services where spouses can receive help tailored to their needs, from crisis intervention to counseling. Use the information below to find the right source for your family.
Non-medical counseling resources available through OneSource and the Family Life Consultant Program can help address marital problems before and after they become more serious concerns.
Navy Education Program & Tuition Assistance
OneSource offers free non-medical counseling to service members and their spouses and children. After a brief phone screening, a OneSource employee will refer an eligible service member or family member to a local, licensed professional counselor free of charge. Counseling can be done over the phone or face-to-face online. It is intended to be short-term and includes 12 free sessions per person. For more information, call 800-342-9647 or visit OneSource.
Family Life Consultants (MFLCs) are licensed, experienced clinical providers with a master's degree or Ph.D. degrees and provide on-base support to service members and their spouses. Like counselors available through OneSource, they provide non-medical, short-term counseling for issues such as anger management or parenting issues. They also refer cases requiring additional mental health treatment to appropriate behavioral health agencies. But the best thing about MFLCs is their availability. Generally, each unit is assigned an MFLC who is easily accessible by just a phone call or a walk-in to their office. You can contact the MFLC through the appropriate source at your home establishment.

The Defense Center of Excellence (DCoE) focuses on mental health and traumatic brain injury. Families can contact the DCoE Outreach Center through their call center at 866-966-1020 or Real Warriors Live Chat to provide resources for families in need of counseling.

Relationship and marriage classes and retreats are offered almost everywhere through your unit, base chaplain, or church or gate support center. Classes can be offered weekly or as a one-off seminar or weekend retreat. The best way to locate these resources is to contact the original pastor. A chaplain can also tell you about the Marriage Care Retreat Program (Air Force), Strong Bonds (Army), or Credo (Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard).
To receive medical consultation, service members and spouses from every branch -- including National Guard members, reservists and DoD civilian employees deployed overseas -- can be evaluated and treated at a treatment facility (MTF). Staff and spouses in need of mental health care can receive help from a variety of providers depending on their condition.

You are planning to get married. Or you plan to marry a service member. Congratulations! But are there any marriage laws or marriage rules that you should know before you get married?
Proxy Marriage For Immigration Purposes
There are no marriage fees and you don't need a special marriage license. If someone tells you that they have to pay marriage fees or that you need special permission, you may be a victim of a love scam.
There are marriage rules for certain groups of people who are in the process of joining. Cadets in service academies are not allowed to marry until they graduate as members or leave their academy. Otherwise, there are no rules about who and when members can marry.
A set of rules also governs the "fraternity". Among other prohibitions, those rules generally state that a military member and an officer cannot marry. However, there are many exceptions to this rule. For example, if two members are married and one of them later becomes an officer, the relationship is acceptable. Members seeking further information on this rule may consult their Legal Services database.
There are rules about when members can keep their civil husband or wife with them. Troops cannot take their spouse on their deployment. Some duty stations, especially overseas, may be classified as particularly dangerous and may not allow family members, or family members may be restricted because there is insufficient family housing. In these cases, troops are sent on non-isolated movement orders.
